According to Nikkei Chinese site, Huawei is expected to expand the scope of Wi-Fi patent authorization and grant its Wi-Fi 6 patents to foreign companies for the first time. According to the information, Huawei and Buffalo, a major Japanese wireless communications equipment company, have reached a consensus on an agreement to allow the use of a standard-essential patent (SEP) that is indispensable for providing Wi-Fi 6 services.
Compared with Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 supports two-way MU-MIMO, OFDMA, WPA3 and other technologies, with increased capacity, lower latency, and more stable signals. Currently, Buffalo has launched router products that support the Wi-Fi 6 standard. According to Huawei, the conclusion of this licensing agreement will further improve the competitiveness of Baffa’s products.
At present, the two parties have not announced the specific amount of patent licensing fees. According to statistics from Japan Technology Trade (NGB) show that Huawei holds 122 patents for Wi-Fi 6 SEP, accounting for nearly 20% of the total , second only to Qualcomm’s 123 patents.
