Counterpoint: OLED smartphone display growth rate will slow in 2022

According to the latest report released by market research Counterpoint, OLED panels will account for 42% of the global smartphone display panel market in 2021, an increase of 10% over the previous year. This growth rate will slow in 2022, however, and is expected to grow by just 2%.

As per the details, OLED displays in 5G smartphones accounted for 80% in the fourth quarter of 2021, down about 2% from the same period last year. As reported by businesskorea, Counterpoint Research explained that the slowdown in the growth of the OLED panel market is related to downward pressure on the average price of 5G smartphones . Prices of key components such as chipsets are rising sharply due to a lack of supply.

In addition, the supply and price of OLED panels are also obstacles. In fact, rigid organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels can directly replace LCDs on cheap smartphones, but global supply has recently reached its limit. This is due to display companies shifting from lower-yielding rigid OLED panels to high-end flexible OLED panels.

At the same time, the price of flexible OLED panels, the preferred choice for high-end models have fallen sharply around 2020, and penetration has also risen.
