Huawei Launches Nvidia Rival with New AI Computing Platform

Chinese tech company Huawei displayed a powerful new AI computing system that experts say could compete with America’s top chip maker, Nvidia.

The system, called CloudMatrix 384, was shown for the first time at a big tech conference in Shanghai. Many people crowded around Huawei’s display area to get a look at it.

Tech experts have been talking about this system since Huawei first mentioned it back in April. They think it could go head-to-head with Nvidia’s best product, something called the GB200 NVL72.

One chip researcher named Dylan Patel wrote that Huawei’s new system might actually work better than what Nvidia offers. That’s a big deal because Nvidia has been the leader in making the special computer chips needed for artificial intelligence.

When reporters asked Huawei workers at the conference to explain how their system works, they wouldn’t give any details. The company also didn’t answer questions from news outlets.

Huawei has become China’s best hope for making its own AI chips, even though the U.S. government has put restrictions on what technology American companies can sell to them. Even Nvidia’s boss, Jensen Huang, admitted in May that Huawei has been making progress quickly.

The CloudMatrix 384 uses 384 of Huawei’s newest chips, while Nvidia’s competing system uses 72 chips. According to the research firm, Huawei’s system performs better in some areas.
