Huawei and Liaoning Mobile
China Mobile’s Liaoning branch and Huawei have built the world’s first special base station in Dandong City. This new base station uses 700MHz frequency and advanced technology to work better during disasters.
Tests show this base station works much better than older ones – it covers 4.5 times more area, downloads are 24% faster, and uploads are 47% faster. The base station is also smaller and easier to set up quickly. Most importantly, it can keep working even when the power goes out or other networks fail, so people can still make calls and use the internet during floods, snowstorms, and other emergencies.
Liaoning Mobile explained that Dandong is a coastal city that gets hit by typhoons in summer (causing floods) and cold waves in winter (causing snowstorms). In 2024, a terrible flood hit Dandong, flooding the city, knocking out power and phone service, and cutting off small towns completely. To help prevent this from happening again, Liaoning Mobile wanted to build a “digital lifeline” – basically a communication system that works no matter what.
The new emergency tower uses special 700MHz frequency, which is great because these radio waves travel far, go through buildings well, and don’t get blocked easily. This solves the problem of small towns being cut off from communication during disasters. The tower also connects to satellites, making it even more reliable.
Huawei says these emergency base station can work in all kinds of places – oceans, grasslands, deserts, and anywhere you need long-distance coverage. During disasters, they can support important services like emergency command centers, drone monitoring, and high-quality video calls, making rescue operations much more effective.
