The world’s top ten semiconductor buyers: Huawei’s purchases plummeted

On February 10th, Gartner the market research announced the data of the world’s top ten semiconductor buyers in 2020. According to Gartner data, the top 10 semiconductor buyers in 2020 are still the same as in 2019, but with a 10% increase in spending by 10%, these ten manufacturers purchased 42% of global chips in 2019. A year-on-year increase of 40%.

In terms of specific manufacturer rankings, Apple is the largest buyer of semiconductor chips in 2020, with an amount of US$53.616 billion, an increase of 24% compared with the same period last year, and accounting for 11.9% of the global market share. In the second position, Samsung ranked with an amount of US$36.416 billion, a year-on-year increase of 20.4%.

Although Huawei was affected by US sanctions and its spending on semiconductor chip procurement decreased by 23% year-on-year last year, it is still the world’s third-largest semiconductor buyer.

Manufacturers ranked 4th to 10th are Lenovo, Dell, BBK Electronics, HP, Xiaomi , Hon Hai Group, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Gartner Research Director Masatsune Yamaji said: “There are two main factors affecting the semiconductor spending of top OEMs in 2020, namely the COVID-19 pandemic and the conflict between China and the United States.”

Yamaji said: “The U.S. government has increased trade restrictions on Huawei in 2020, limiting its ability to purchase semiconductors, thereby limiting the supply of its smartphones and reducing its market share.”
