Huawei won again in the 5G core essential patent competition

According to the information, with the continuous evolution of the 5G landscape, many companies have declared patents in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

The report shows that the 4796 families of 5G standard declaration patents are essential patents for 5G core standards, accounting for 22% of the total declared patents. Among various suppliers, Huawei leads the race in the proportion of declared patents, important technical fields, and terminal/base station side distribution.

In terms of holdings of essential patents for 5G core standards, 6 companies including Huawei, Samsung, LG, Qualcomm, Nokia, and Ericsson account for 70% of the total. Not surprisingly, Huawei topped the list with an absolute advantage of 21%.

From the perspective of the proportion of 5G core standard-essential patents in the declared patents, the only companies that accounted for 22% higher than the average were Huawei and Ericsson, and Huawei ranked first with 27%.

In order to better understand the investment of various suppliers in 5G technology, the report also gives the average remaining life of their 5G core patent family. Huawei, Samsung, LG, Qualcomm, and Ericsson have little difference in the average remaining lifespan of 5G core essential standard patents, with Huawei and LG having the highest average life expectancy at 13.2 years.

The report also analyzed the distribution of 5G core patent families in the three 3GPP technical specification groups (TSG)-radio access network (TSG RAN), services and systems (TSG SA), and core network and terminals (TSG CT). 78% of the 5G core patent family is related to TSG RAN, which is responsible for defining the functions, requirements and interfaces of the network, which fully reflects the importance of this technical field.

In terms of technical field distribution, Huawei’s 5G core standard-essential patent holdings in RAN TSG are much higher than other companies, and its 5G core standard essential patent holdings in SA TSG and CT TSG are also among the best. Specifically, in the working group, Huawei has the most 5G core patent families in multiple working groups such as R1, R2, R3, C4, S2, S3, and S5.

On the whole, in the nine months from July 1, 2020, the number of 5G core standard essential patents has increased by 51%, indicating that 5G technology is booming, and various suppliers are continuing to advance on the path of technological evolution. And Huawei’s performance in the analysis of all dimensions of the report is very eye-catching, fully demonstrating its leadership in the 5G technology field, as well as its huge investment and outstanding contribution to 5G.
